The Beginners Guide to Purchasing a Domain Name

For those that want to know how to purchase a domain name, the process of actually purchasing a domain name is easy. The details in the process are what will trip you up. In this article, I'll lay out some common mistakes people make when buying domains and how to save money and get your domain name as cheap as possible.

To buy a domain name, you need to visit a domain registrar. The first crucial mistake people buying a domain name make is they think that all domain name registrars are the same. This is False! Domain registrars charge very different prices for registrations of different extensions and are known to have very different levels of customer service.

Second, when you are ready to buy domain name registration, you need to be aware of the different extensions and different prices. In general, if you don't know what you're doing, you only want to buy a .com or a .net. Many newbies will register all the domain names available in their name, keywords, or brand. You'll pay a ton of money if you do this every year so be sure that you absolutely need a certain extension before you buy it.

Third, almost all domain registrars will send you through a gauntlet of website related products and upsells to buy with your domain name. You don't need them! If you want to start a website, look for a separate webhost. Separate webhosting is both cheaper and better quality with more features.

The only products you will need are 1) your domain name and 2) possibly domain privacy protection. Domain registration privacy keeps your name, address, phone number, and email from being looked up by someone looking at the info behind your name. Privacy can be very expensive so be careful where you buy this from.

Last, you don't need to register your domain for any more than 1 year. Yes, domain registration only lasts a year, but you will be sent reminders on when it is expiring and you can choose to renew it if you want to then. The only difference is you'll pay money up front by registering for more years 2-5 or maybe even 10 when you initially buy your web address.

This is all the info you need to register a domain name right now without spending anymore than you have to. As to how to purchase a domain name, just visit a domain registrar, search for the name you want, once you find an available name, select it, and then enter your registration info and buy it with a credit card or paypal. That's it!
