Mark Hominick Hematoma
In UFC 129, Mark Hominick fought valiantly against champion Jose Aldo (see Mark Hominick head photos below). In fact, had there been more time in the match, Mark Hominick was going to beat Aldo because Aldo was completely spent. For the last minute of the 5th round, Jose Aldo's only defense was to try and get in the way of Hominick's punches from top mount.
All in all, it was a great effort by Hominick but finishing the Aldo fight came at a huge cost. Mark Hominick suffered ghastly growth swelling from his head (hematoma) after a fourth round flurry by Jose Aldo. Mark Hominick's hematoma was so bad that announcer Joe Rogan thought there was no way the fight would be allowed to continue. Rogan referred to the growth as a second head.
The fight was stopped to allow the ring doctor to inspect Hominick but he was cleared to fight by the doctor and Hominick had no hesitation in continuing. When the fourth round ended about a minute later, Mark Hominick looked like a character in a horror movie. His corner did manage to dull the protusion from his forehead but only after his corner smoothed out the bump by pushing it down.
Had Jose Aldo busted the hematoma, I don't even want to know what that scene would have looked like. And Hominick's head growth wasn't the only place where he had been busted up, it was just the biggest. Hominick also had a nice half a golf ball growing a little below the hemotoma, near his cheek bone. On the right side of his face, Hominick was completely busted open under his right eye.
After the fight, he said he hoped he hadn't made his wife go into labor. One can only hope she missed the last 3 rounds. Hominick certainly showed heart and toughness but I question whether he made the smart call. Maybe if he had saw his head, that might have made a difference but I doubt it. Hominick was intent on finishing the fight but at what cost?
I have no idea what the effects of a huge lump on your head are but it didn't look normal and made me think the fight should have been stopped immediately. I wouldn't have questioned Mark Hominick's toughness at all if he stopped the fight. Addressing his second head would have been fully justified in letting the final round go.
What do you think, should Mark Hominick have stopped for medical precaution or had he come far to quit?
